Cycloheximide is a fungal-derived compound used particuLarly in molecuLar biology, microbiology, and cell biology. It inhibits protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells by interfering with the translocation step during protein elongation on the ribosome. It binds to the 60S ribosomal subunit and prevents the movement of peptidyl-tRNA from the A-site to the P-site, inhibiting the synthesis of new polypeptide chains.
Widely used in research to study celluLar processes, including apoptosis, autophagy, and the reguLation of gene expression. Cycloheximide is often used in cell cuLture studies to block de novo protein synthesis, allowing researchers to study the stability and turnover of existing proteins. In microbiology research, it selectively inhibits the growth of fungi in cuLture media, making it a usefuL tool for isolating and identifying bacteria without interference from fungi.
