Background Information | Integrin alpha-11 (ITGA11) belongs to a family of cell adhesion molecules, which consist of noncovalent associated alpha-beta heterodimers, and is shown to be overexpressed in the stroma of human non-small-cell lung carcinomas (hNSCLCs). Upon dimerization, this protein is thought to enhance tumorgenicity of hNSCLCs by interacting with matrix collagen and stromal fibroblasts. Progesterone is shown to increase the expression of ITGA11 through mid-gestation and decrease thereafter in Sprague-Dawley rats. It is further indicated that MAPK signaling is associated with the regulation of these integrins. |

Entrez Gene Number |
|
Entrez Gene Summary | This gene encodes an alpha integrin. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. This protein contains an I domain, is expressed in muscle tissue, dimerizes with beta 1 integrin in vitro, and appears to bind collagen in this form. Therefore, the protein may be involved in attaching muscle tissue to the extracellular matrix. Alternative transcriptional splice variants have been found for this gene, but their biological validity is not determined. |

UniProt Summary | FUNCTION: Integrin alpha-11/beta-1 is a receptor for collagen. SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Heterodimer of an alpha and a beta subunit. Alpha-11 associates with beta-1. Interacts with RAB21. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Membrane. Note: Single-pass type I membrane protein. |
Molecular Weight | ~135 kDa observed. The high molecular weight band seen in a HeLa (non boiled) cell lysate is the integrin complex. The band at ~75-80 kDa is thought to be a denatured form of integrin. |
