Tris (Hydroxymethyl) Aminomethane (Tris)is a titrating agent invivoas well asin vitro.Tris buffer has been widely used in studies concerning the gram negative bacteria cell envelope. Such studies have revealed that the effect of Tris on the outer membrane appears to be highly specific. It has been suggested that Tris alters the outer membrane permeability by disrupting ionic interactions.

Recent work related to antigen retrieval agents has shown thatTris significantly reverses formaldehyde fixation of Angiotensin 1 demonstrated by reduction of the mono-methylene (m/z1308 Da) and di-methylene adduct (m/z1320 Da) and regeneration of the native species (m/z1296 Da) compared to water alone.
