Sulfobetaine-10 is a zwitterionic detergent which retains its zwitterionic character over a broad pH range. Sulfobetaines contain a positively charged quaternary ammonium group and a negatively charged sulfonic group.

Utilized for applications ranging from solubilizing membrane proteins in non-denaturing conditions to creating denaturing conditions during gel electrophoresis. It has been determined that zwitterionic detergents (sulfobetaines) can be used as inhibitors of squalene synthase on the basis of the idea that their zwitterionic structure would have properties conducive both to binding in the active site and to passage through cell membranes.
