Expressed on the surface of most nucleated cells, class I molecules are heterodimeric molecules and consist of a type I integral membrane a heavy chain and soluble B2 microglobulin protein. The extracellular region of the heavy chain further consists of 3 domains, one of which comprises the peptide binding groove. Antigens binding to class I molecules are 8-10 amino acids long and play an important role in recognition of the virus infected and malignant cells by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs).
