Description:
Hypoxanthine (6-hydroxypurine) is a naturally-occurring purine derivative that is formed in the bodies of animals, as well as plant tissues. This deaminated form of adenine may be found as a component of nucleic acids, present in the anticodon of transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA). Acting as a primary feedstock intermediate, hypoxanthine can be used to synthesize a range of 6-substituted purines.
Applications:
A necessary additive in specific cultures, hypoxanthine acts as a nitrogen source for certain bacteria, parasite, and cell samples.Helping to stimulate initial cell growth, hypoxanthine is also often used to produce antibodies. For example, hypoxanthine is often required to initiate chemical reactions while studying malaria parasite cultures.
